Terms of Service

Last updated October 21, 2026

The short version.

  • What you make in LitLit is yours. You let us store and process it so LitLit can work for you.
  • Answers are written by AI from the papers on your map. They can be wrong, so check the sources before you rely on them.
  • Paid plans renew until you cancel. Cancelling keeps your plan until the end of the period you’ve paid for.
  • Credits are granted each month and don’t carry over.
  • Don’t misuse the service, for example by scraping it, getting around its limits, or using it to break the law.

The agreement

These terms are an agreement between you and LitLit AI Limited (“LitLit”, “we”, “us”), for your use of litlit.ai and the LitLit app (the “Service”). By using the Service you accept them. If you use LitLit for an organisation, you accept them on its behalf. The Privacy Policy explains how we handle personal data.

Accounts

  • You need to be at least 16 to use LitLit.
  • An account is for one person. Keep access to your email and sign-in accounts secure, because whoever can use them can use your LitLit account.
  • You can try LitLit without an account. Trial sessions have a small allowance, and what you make moves to your account when you sign in.
  • You can delete your account at any time in Settings.

Plans, credits and payment

Credits

Building a map, adding a branch and asking a question use credits, at the rates shown on the pricing page. Each plan grants credits every calendar month (UTC). Unused credits don’t carry over and have no cash value. If a map fails to build, its credits are returned.

Subscriptions

  • Paid plans are billed monthly or yearly in advance through Stripe, in US dollars, and renew automatically until you cancel.
  • An upgrade applies straight away, with the new plan’s credits. You pay the prorated difference for the rest of the period.
  • When you cancel or downgrade, the change takes effect at the end of the period you’ve paid for. You keep your current plan until then. Cancel at any time from Settings → Plan and billing, which opens the Stripe billing portal.
  • Prices may include or exclude taxes depending on where you are, as shown at checkout.

Refunds and price changes

Payments aren’t refundable, except where the law says otherwise or where we decide to refund. If something went wrong, write to hello@litlit.ai. If we change a plan’s price, we’ll tell you at least 30 days before it applies to your next renewal, so you can cancel first.

Your content

You own the questions, notes, tags and other content you add to LitLit. You give us a worldwide, non-exclusive licence to host, copy, process and display that content, only to provide and improve the Service for you. This includes sending it to our AI model providers and other processors. The licence ends when you delete the content or your account, except for copies in backups, which expire.

When you share a map, anyone with the link can view it, including its conversations and notes, until you stop sharing. You are responsible for what you share.

AI answers and research

  • Maps, summaries and answers are produced automatically, by AI models and algorithms, from paper metadata and the texts LitLit can reach. They can be incomplete, out of date or wrong, even when they cite a paper.
  • Check the original papers before you rely on an answer, cite it, or make decisions with it.
  • LitLit gives no medical, legal, financial or other professional advice.
  • Within the limits of the law, what LitLit writes for you is yours to use. Similar questions may get similar answers for other people.

Papers and third-party data

Paper metadata comes from scholarly databases, including OpenAlex and Semantic Scholar, under their terms. Papers and their abstracts belong to their authors and publishers. LitLit links to the original sources, and reads open-access texts only to answer your questions. It doesn’t give you rights to any paper beyond what its licence allows.

Acceptable use

Don’t:

  • break the law, or infringe anyone’s rights, with LitLit or what it produces;
  • scrape, crawl or bulk-download the Service, or use it to build a competing dataset or product;
  • get around credits, rate limits or other limits, for example with multiple accounts or automated sign-ups;
  • probe, overload or disrupt the Service, or access other people’s accounts or data;
  • share content that is unlawful, harassing or deceptive, or that you don’t have the right to share;
  • resell or sublicense access to the Service without our written agreement.

We may limit, suspend or close accounts that break these rules. If we close a paid account for a reason other than a breach, we’ll refund the unused part of the period.

The Service

LitLit, its software, design and name belong to us. These terms give you a personal, non-transferable right to use the Service, and no other rights in it. If you send us feedback, we may use it without owing you anything.

We keep improving LitLit, so features may change, and some may be added or removed. We aim to keep it available, but it may sometimes be interrupted, including for maintenance. If we stop offering the Service, we’ll give you at least 30 days’ notice so you can export your papers, and refund any prepaid period that remains.

Disclaimers and liability

The Service is provided “as is” and “as available”. To the extent the law allows, we disclaim all warranties, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy and non-infringement.

To the extent the law allows, we aren’t liable for indirect, incidental, special or consequential losses, or for lost profits, data or goodwill. Our total liability for any claim about the Service is limited to the greater of what you paid us in the 12 months before the claim and US$50.

Nothing in these terms limits rights you have as a consumer that can’t be limited by contract, or liability that can’t be excluded by law.

You’ll indemnify us against claims arising from content you share or from your breach of these terms.

Law and disputes

These terms are governed by the laws of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. The courts of Hong Kong have jurisdiction, unless the law of the country where you live as a consumer gives you the right to bring a claim there. Before going to court, please write to us so we can try to sort it out.

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms. If a change matters, we’ll tell you by email or in the app at least 14 days before it applies. If you keep using LitLit after that, you accept the new terms. If you don’t, you can cancel and delete your account.
